GLOSSARY OF ACRONYMS

In this table, you find explanations to the acronyms in order of appearence in the Chip Selector.
DMA
Direct Memory Access controller - a device that allows data to be transferred to or from memory or peripherals bypassing the system Central Processing Unit (CPU).
CAN
Controller Area Network - a serial data bus for real-time applications, originally developed for use in the automotive industry.
SPI
Serial Peripheral Interface bus -a synchronous serial data link standard named by Motorola that operates in full duplex mode.
SSP
Synchronous Serial Port module - a serial interface useful for communicating with other peripherals or microcontroller devices.
I2C
Inter-Integrated Circuit - a multi-master serial computer bus invented by Philips that is used to attach low-speed peripherals to a motherboard, embedded system, or cellphone.
UART

Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter - an integrated circuit used for RS-232C serial communications, containing a transmitter (parallel-to serial converter) and a receiver (serial-to-parallel converter), each clocked separately.

USART
Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter module - one of the two serial I/O modules (other is the SSP module). The USART is also known as a Serial Communications Interface or SCI.
IrDA
Infrared Data Association - defines physical specifications communications protocol standards for the short-range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks.
GPIO
General-Purpose Input/Output pins - offer flexibility for a variety of connections.
PWM

Pulse Width Modulation - a powerful technique for digitally encoding analog signal levels.

WDG
A watchdog timer can generate nonmaskable interrupts (NMIs) or a reset when a time-out value is reached. The watchdog timer is used to regain control when a system has failed due to a software error or to the failure of an external device to respond in the expected way.
ADC
Analog-to-Digital Converter (abbreviated ADC, A/D or A to D) - an electronic integrated circuit, which converts continuous signals to discrete digital numbers. The reverse operation is performed by a digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
DAC
Digital-to-Analog Converter (abbreviated DAC D/A or D-to-A) - a device for converting a digital (usually binary) code to an analog signal.
RTC
Real-Time Clock - a battery powered clock that allows the computer to keep time. The RTC keeps track of the second, minute, hour, day, month and year.
JTAG
Joint Test Action Group - provides a standardized serial interface for controlling the Test Action Port (TAP) and associated test logic.
ETM
Embedded Trace Macrocell - provides comprehensive debug and trace facilities for ARM processors.
